A gripping narrative history of the 1889 Johnstown Flood - the deadliest flood in US history - from New York Times best-selling author, NBC host, and legendary weather authority Al Roker.
May 1889: After a deluge of rainfall - nearly a foot in less than 24 hours - swelled the Little Conemaugh River, panicked engineers watched helplessly as swiftly rising waters threatened to breach the South Fork Dam in central Pennsylvania. Though they telegraphed neighboring towns on this last morning in May, warning of the impending danger, residents, used to false alarms, remained in their homes.
At 3:10 p.m., the dam gave way, releasing 20 million tons of water. Gathering speed as it flowed southwest, the deluge wiped out entire towns in its path and picked up debris - trees, houses, animals - before reaching Johnstown, 14 miles downstream. Traveling 40 miles an hour, with swells as high as 60 feet, the deadly floodwaters razed the mill town - home to 20,000 people - in minutes. The Great Flood, as it would come to be called, remains the deadliest in US history, killing more than 2,200 people and causing $17 million in damage.
Al Roker tells the riveting story of this tragedy, which remains one of the worst weather-related disasters in American history. Ruthless Tide follows a compelling cast of characters whose fates converged because of that tragic day, including John Parke, the engineer whose heroic efforts failed to save the dam; Henry Clay Frick, the robber baron whose fancy sport-fishing resort was responsible for modifications that weakened the structure; and Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross, who spent five months in Johnstown leading one of the first organized disaster relief efforts. Weaving together their stories and those of many ordinary citizens whose lives were forever altered by the event, Roker creates a classic account of our natural world at its most terrifying.

Maybe because my Family and I are survivors of the devastation of the 1977 Flood, that ripped from our lives everything but our Family and Faith...but I was memorized over the horrific details of the water's devastation as it flowed thru the valleys and finally hit Johnstown. I was reading this as my client slept, while I worked the nightshift, then at 4AM, I had to drive thru the errie sleeping quiet valley & city ,of course, the light at Walnut & Napoleon was RED. I can't explain my emotions! I almost burst into tears as I stared at that hillside that stopped the raging waters! Al Roker's Book is a MUST read! As an area native I had no clue about the role Johnstown played in the industrialization of our society or the changes it made on world. Makes me proud and sad but these are emotions I never would have experienced had I not read this book! Thank You Mr. Roker.
I grew up in Western Pennsylvania and I recently read David McCullough's book on the Johnstown Flood. I didn't gain any new insights on the Johnstown Flood from reading Roker's book. In fact, I thought that he relied too heavily on McCullough's book. I gave this book two stars instead of one star because Roker paid more attention than McCullough did to the prominent members of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club.
As a current Johnstown resident, I looked forward to the flood story told again. Started to read, it is well told, but stopped when I knew Mr. Roker did not come to see this beautiful place. He would have enjoyed more stories and walked in the footsteps of those who lived and died here. It is a great living history place. People would have loved ushering him from dam site to cottages to Alma Hall to Grandview Cemetery and more. I came to my senses and finished. It is really good, well researched and his story telling is engaging. I’m happy to add it to my Jtwn collection. Read it! Enjoy the journey! Come see for yourself and bring your copy of Ruthless Tide with you as a guide.
This study and retelling of the tragedy of Johnstown is a great updating and current interpretation of the events from 1889 of the McCullough classic and standard book on the same subject. Anyone interested in the tragic events would enjoy this fresh look at the whole picture (the events leading up, the terrible events after the dam failure, the recovery, the cover-up by club members, and the long term legal changes to nation liability laws.) Some fascinating individuals and their personal stories are highlighted in the book and it reads almost novel-like.
Suspenseful! Couldn't put it down!! Roker really can write well.Enjoyed the book immensely and read it in one day only.
Having lived in Johnstown for 66 years before moving to NJ, I learned alot about the members of the South Fork Hunting and Fishing Club and there disregard for the construction of the lake and the possibility of the dam (lake) to breach from heavy rains. They were given warnings from engineers, but there goal was to get the club up and runing as quickly as possible by cutting corners. This book along with David McCullough's book (The Johnstown Flood) are 2 good books to read.
The “RUTHLESS TIDE†is a well researched book by Al Roker with compelling historical insights about this catastrophic 1889 flood that destroyed the town and many lives in Johnstown, PA. This new book follows the “JOHNSTOWN FLOOD†book previously written by David McCullough which also told the story of this famous devastating flood and disaster in American history. Unknown to many is that Johnstown was and is a natural flood basin that also incurred far less devastation wth flooding in 1936 and 1977 after prolonged heavy rains. The people are resilient and always bounced back to recover from the damage. I was born and raised in my hometown of Johnstown and alway appreciate the opportunity to learn more of its storied past.
Al Roker's superb writing held me in the grip of the tragic Johnstown Flood of 1889. With each turn of the page I held my breath as the terrible flood raced toward a town of unsuspecting people who were completely at its mercy. This is a tale of greed, ignorance and pure pursuit of pleasure at the expense of the innocent. The most resonant note? The courage and compassion of the people who survived to tell the tell tale and rebuild their own town in the face of horrendous emotional and financial loss. This is a story that laments the grievous loss of the past while at the same time cautions those of the future to weigh good against evil, greed against parity and the ultimate outcome when pleasure and plunder become more important than life itself. A must read! Intense and riveting! Thank you, Mr. Roker, for making history come alive on the page!
