George vs. George: The American Revolution as Seen from Both Sides

George Washington and King George III of Britain had a great deal in common - aside from sharing the same first name. Both loved to hunt and farm, both towered above most other men of their day, and both were dedicated husbands and fathers. Yet despite their similarities, they were destined to become bitter enemies.

As the Revolutionary War erupted, people on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean formed very different opinions. To the patriotic American colonists, George Washington was a hero and King George a tyrant. And to the British (along with the crown loyalists in America), George Washington was considered a traitor while King George remained a loving father of the people. Truly there are two sides to every story in history.

This book is great! We are using it for our fourth grade homeschooling with our American Revolution unit. I am a judge a book by its cover girl and I was immediately drawn to this book! It gives an introduction to both George Washington and King George and then goes through several small chapters, 1. at first glance 2. a look at the life of King George and his countrymen, 3. a look at the life of George Washington and his countrymen, 4. how government worked in England 5. How government works in America, 6. The trouble with taxes, 7. The tempest over tea, 8. George versus George, 9. The shot heard round the world, 10. British forces, 11. Rebel forces, 12. A new nation, 13. The tides of war, 14. The final battle, 15. No kings for America 16. Whatever happened to King George the third 17. What did George Washington do next. Most of these little chapters are about 4 Pages long with half of each page being a picture so really easy for your child to read alone or for you to read out loud in little sections there is one section the tides of war that is several pages long without as much picture. The pictures are really bright and colorful and are fun to look at and my son enjoy those just as much as he enjoyed the reading of the actual book it gives a lot of information without being boring and kind of sums it up really well ! I would highly recommend this book for anyone talking about the American Revolution!!

Really excellent book reviewing the points of view, events and people involved in the American Revolution. Presents a unique opportunity to explore history from a perspective of competing needs and desires rather than the typical "right vs wrong" narrative most elementary school books offer regarding American history. For example, the British aren't portrayed as oppressive tyrants and thr Americans aren't patriotic heroes. Instead, each side in this conflict is presented as having unique needs and visions for their nations.

This is a very short, well-laid out book to learn about each side of the Revolutionary War. There are some cartoon inserts that make little poignant quotes from famous personages of that time. The author has very simply explained all the issues at hand and lets the student learn all the important activities and documents that came from those issues. I would say this is about a 5th to 6th grade reading level, maybe an advanced 4th grader. Thumbs up!

I was hoping this would be a read a loud book for the class but it is too full of information. It is a good resource and I used the information and illustrations. My 11 year old pulls it out and reads it now and again - he is drawn by the conflict that is made clear in George vs George. My thanks to Rosalyn Schanzer for helping the next generation gain a comprehensive understanding of the fight for freedom.

Again a great book for children old enough to read well. It tells a non-biased version of history from both the colonial and the British points of view. Adults may actually enjoy it too.

We used this book to supplement our homeschool history lessons on the American Revolution. This book is packed full of little tidbits of information you won't really get from a history book. It has actual quotes from people of the time. The kids really enjoyed it. It is a very long book for a picture book and we had to break up the readings over 3 days. My kids who enjoyed the book are 4, 6, 8, 10, and 11 years old.

This isn't your typical picture book. It is long and detailed, not something you would likely read in one sitting. Great for teaching American Revolution and multiple perspectives.

I especially value this book as part of my Social Studies Colonial Boston Independence Unit, because it contains an extremely clear explanation on comparing/contrasting Britain's Government with the Colonies' Government, both under King George III. I was having difficulty finding information on this exact topic. There are other compare/contrast structures throughout the book that are also invaluable. The headings guide you well and guard you well from going further in a read-aloud than you may want to, so as to not spoil a future event! I used the book for clarification of concepts we had learned about on the previous day, because the book is so well laid-out.
